ATTENTION STUDENTS!

·        Picture day: Oct. 7, 8, & 9:  Packet/Fliers will be distributed through the Social Studies teachers starting9/30/15.

·        Attention Islanders! Due to spirit week, WAY will not be selling merchandise  on  Wednesday and Thursday but will be selling spirit items during homecoming. Purchase items to showcase your islander pride!

·        Islanders! Tickets for the homecoming games and carnival will be available for purchase on Friday, October 2 at the main office. Support your islanders!

·        Islanders! Represent JFK by running for youth Congress. Those who are interested in running may pick up packets in room C205. If you have any other questions, please see any WAY officer for more information.

·        Islanders! To celebrate homecoming, the 2016 senior officers are holding a spirit week fromMonday 09/28to Friday 10/01! Show your spirit and participate in spirit week games during lunch!  Please, see posters around the campus for more information or see any senior class officer.

·        Sept. 30 is half day professional development.  Students will be released at 10:15 A.M.  Breakfast and lunch will be served.  Class schedules for this day will be provided by your teachers.

·        Please submit your Cell Phone and Technology Use forms byFriday, September 25, 2015 in order to continuously access the campus network in the Library as well as in the classrooms. Students who have not submitted their signed forms will be blocked from PowerSchool until forms are submitted. 

·        Students who walk from Kmart to JFKHS or vice versa are strongly encouraged to use the crosswalk. Do not break the law by jaywalking. Think safety first! 

·        Intramural 3-ON-3 Basketball schedules are posted in front of the gym. Check it out and see Mr. Manansala if you have any questions.  Good Luck and Have fun!

·        Show us what you got Islanders!  Please sign up in C205 if interested to perform on Fridays during lunc

·        Attention Seniors:  Please, attend class meetings everyTuesdayduring lunch in the media center.  Information on important matters such as gowns, portraits, and fundraising events are discussed.

·        ISLANDERS, do you need help with Math, English, Social Studies, or Science?  NHS offers lunchtime tutoring every Tuesday in B210, D211, and D214 andThursdayin B210, C202, and D105. Please get a hallway pass from your teacher.  We hope to see you there.  Learning makes things possible, but learningthe possibilities is endless.

·        Attendance: Admit slips must be submitted to the attendance office within three days upon return back to school.   We will not accept late notes.

·        School-wide NO HOODED JACKETS policy applies to the classroom as well.  If your classroom is too cold, report to FOAS the need for the thermostat to be raised.  Only non-hooded sweaters and jackets may be worn ON CAMPUS.  Teachers - your assistance for enforcement is expected; call SSSO for assistance, if needed.  On rainy days, students are encouraged to use foldable umbrellas or clear ponchos. 

·        Only clear and mesh bags are allowed on campus.  Lunch bags should be smaller in size, clear or mesh bags recommended.  All bags in violation will be confiscated.

·        Lockouts will be conducted any time any day.  Get to your classes on time. \

·        JFKHS Spirit Fridays:  Students may wear a JFKHS Club/Organization/Interscholastic/Class Shirts such as Vivace, JROTC, Nursing, Class of 2015 or other approved JFKHS shirts. Uniform bottom is required.  All shirts must promote JFKHS. JFKHS colors alone are UNACCEPTABLE.  Again- this is on Fridays!

Last Saturday, we had our Carnival and Homecoming Festivities.  The JFKHS Administration thanks all students, teachers / advisors, and staff who assisted with the organization and implementation of our successful celebration.  We are so proud of our students for their overall involvement and positive behavior!   Congratulations to our football players for their victory!  Biba Islanders!  

ATTENTION STUDENTS!

·         Attention Students:  NHS is sponsoring a "uniform drive" and "school supplies drive." Please donate any clean school uniforms or new school supply items to room B210 or D105 during break and lunch. Deadline isOctober 16.  Please, see your teachers, if this is a service learning opportunity. 

·         Attention Students:  NHS Packets can be picked up in D105 during lunch. The final day to pick up application packets isOctober 9, 2015.  These packets once completed are dueOctober 16, 2015during lunch. ...Educating our island students to become globally primed high achievers.

·         Seniors:  Please, turn in your diploma applications and Parent Credit/SL Update Letters with parent’s signature.  These were passed out last month. 

·         Congratulations to our elected IBOG Reps for 2015-16: Mr. Jeremy Zamora and Mr. James Tenorio, W.A.Y. Secretary:  Mr. Joseph Madlangbayan, Freshmen Council: President:  Jacky Chen, Vice-President:  Anna Palacios, Treasurer:  Rachel Castro, Secretary: Milliun Saplan, and P.R.O.:  Ariana Tan!

·         Hafa Adai students let’s show our Islander spirit and spread the awareness of RED RIBBON WEEK.  The main purpose of the Red Ribbon Campaign is to present a unified and visible commitment toward the creation of Drug Free America.  Schedules of events are: October 23 - October 31, 2015: Spirit week.  October 23, 2015- WAY and Class Councils will be passing out red ribbons and pledge cards at the main entrance gate and drop off back gate.  Students are encouraged to wear ribbon all week long. October 23, 2015- Student councils will have pledge cards that students may sign during lunch. October 26, 2015- Teachers and students are encouraged to put up posters and banners spreading awareness of a Drug Free America. October 28, 2015- Students are asked to wear red shoes for "A Walk Away From Drugs" event.  October 29, 2015- Students are asked to wear the craziest socks they can with red socks for a "Sock It to Drugs Day". October 30, 2015- Students are asked to wear red buttons, bows, hair ribbons wrists bands or ties.  (NO BANDANAS OR GANG AFFILIATED ITEMS ARE ALLOWED) November 3, 2015 - Join WAY in showcasing what JFK has done in support of Red Ribbon Week.

FROM THE COUNSELORS: 

·         Announcement:  College Access Challenge Grant Program (CACGP) tutors are on campus every Thursday and Friday during lunch hour in the library media center to provide tutoring.  This is open to all students who need help with their classes.  For more information, please see Ms. Nanpei in the Counseling Office.

·         Attention 10th and 11th graders:  If you have signed up for the PSAT Testing, please provide the copy of your receipt to Mr. Pilarca or Mrs. Gina Santos to ensure you received a study guide and a slot for testing. The Testing takes place onOctober 14at the Media Center JFK Library at7am.

·         Further instructions will be sent to you this week. If you are still interested in taking the PSAT, there are still slots open. Please submit payment to the Business Office. 

·         Attention students, if you are interested in taking Psychology or Peer Counseling Course, see your counselor this week. Please, check out the Counselors' bulletin board in front of their office for important information on scholarships and deadlines

·         University of Guam's Upward Bound (UB) college prep program is now accepting applications from eligible high school students (9th through 12th grade.) UB provides free tutoring, college prep activities, career exploration

o   activities, assistance with financial aid/ scholarship applications, summer program at UOG, and more benefits! Deadline to apply is October 31, 2015. Please see JFK Counselor, Dr. Marzan, or email UB staff at ubuog1992@gmail.com for an application or further information. 

·         UOG’s Educational Talent Search (ETS) is now accepting applications. ETS is a FREE college prep program that provides tutoring, assistance with completing college applications and financial aid, provides review courses for the PSAT/SAT, career assessment activities and more. For more information, see Mr. Lujan in the Counseling Office.                                                                                                 

·         Attention 10thand 11thGraders: The PSAT/NMSQT are great ways to preview, practice for the SAT, and qualify for a scholarship. They test the same skills and knowledge as the SAT — in a way that makes sense for your grade level.There are only 60 slots for testing. The PSAT will be held onOctober 14, 2015. The test cost is $15.00. Make payment to the Business Office and provide the receipt to Mr. Pilarca or Mrs. Gina Santos so you can pick up a student guide. Please see Mr. Pilarca or Mrs. Gina Santos for more information.

·         Attention Seniors! Josten's rep will be taking cap and gown orders next week from October 28-30 during lunch in front of the main office.  Cash and check payments only! Senior Class WILL NOT be accepting  any payments for cap and gown. 

·         Islanders! The SeniorClass of 2016 presents the "Orphanage from Hell" Haunted House at the Acanta Mall on 10/30, 10/31, & 11/1. Tickets are $5 presold and $8 at the door. See any senior officer, or chairs Sydney or Joseph M. 

·         JFKHS Budget Presentation will be on Oct. 21 (Wednesday) at 6:00 P.M. in the media center.  Please, encourage your parents to attend.

·         Islanders! Support JFK by voting for our Red Ribbon murals on the Red Ribbon Guahan Guam Facebook page. Please like the pictures and share them amongst your fellow islanders! Biba JFK!"

·         Presentations on Adult High School Student Organization (AHSO) are scheduled on October 21 and 30.  The students in this organization provide peer mentoring to students who are at-risk for dropping out of high school by sharing their personal challenges as students who did not complete high school and are now enrolled in GCC’s Adult High School Diploma Program. 

·         Presentations on Adult Education Program are scheduled on October 22.  Students will learn about the requirements and process for GED and Adult High School.  Due to limited space, please see Chelsea in the Counseling Office.  TEACHERS:  You have the option of bringing the entire class or having students sign up for certain presentations.  STUDENTS:  Students please see Chelsea in the Counseling Office to sign up for any of the presentations.  You will be given a ticket to attend the presentation.  Priority will be given to the first 15 students who sign up per presentation.  Please see Ms. Nanpei in the Counseling Office or email her atrosemarie.nanpei@guamcc.edufor more information.

·         Islanders! Interested in performing? Have a passion for music? Then attend the meeting today, October 22 during lunch in room B101. Important matters will be discussed.

·         Have you ever had an interest in educating young minds? Want to be a part of a group with a similar interest? If you see education in your future, come and join the Future Educators Association (FEA). An unofficial meeting will be held today, Thursday, October 22nd, during lunch in room A205.

ATTENTION STUDENTS!

·         Congratulations newly inducted members to the National Honor Society (NHS), John F. Kennedy Chapter! Thank you to the panel that diligently screened these new members. Congratulations and thank you to the advisers, Ms. Montague and Ms. Leysa for continuously supporting our NHS students.

·         Attention Islanders: Your Vivace Spirit Shirt Orders have arrived. Please pick up at the choir room during LUNCH ONLY or see your respective Senior Vivace member. Thank you again for your awesome support!

·         Students Helping Students!  If you have JFK uniforms which you believe will benefit other students, please bring them to the nurse’s office as donation.

·         Attention Seniors! The Seniors’ Parent Meeting is scheduled tonight at 6:00 P.M. at the cafeteria.

·         The GATE Theatre Arts Program will be performing “It’s a Wonderful Life-a Radio Play’, at the Southern High School Auditorium on Thursday, Friday and Saturday (Nov. 19, 20 &21).  Doors open at

o   6:30 p. m. The show starts at 7:00 p.m. General admissions is $5.00.  For more information call the GATE Office at 477-0631.

·         Attention Students the 7th Regional Center for Island Sustainability (CIS) conference is scheduled for April 11 - 15th.  Part of the CIS conference includes a Green Dream Home High School Competition.  If you are interested in putting together a team to compete -- here are the basics: 1) Only students are allowed to work on the models or drawings. Advisors, parents, and/or non-students can however give advice and ideas pertaining to model homes.  2) Participants can range from a single student to a maximum of 15 per group. However, only 5 representatives (and 1 adviser) from each winning team will be allowed free access to the conference. 3) A maximum of 2 models per school can be represented in the competition. If more than 2 models are available, we will hold an in-school competition to select the best 2 representatives to the conference. 3) Deadline to confirm participation for the contest is Jan. 29th by 5:00 PM.   Please, see Mrs. F. ·         Hafa Adai Freshmen Students: If you selected the Lodging Management Program or ProStart in your interest form after the Electives Fair, you will be called out for brief interview starting this week during Lunch and/or 5th period. Corridor passes will be delivered to you in advance. 

·         Attention Teachers: GCC CTE Programs will be holding interviews for freshmen students interested in enrolling in next year's programs. ·          Do you think you're fit for royalty?  Become a candidate for this year's Sweethearts Ball!  Get an application form from Ms. Sanchez in F109.  The King, Queen, Prince, Princess, Dutch & Duchess will be announced at the ball.  Details about the Ball are soon to be announced. 

·         School-wide NO HOODED JACKETS policy applies to the classroom as well.  If your classroom is too cold, report to FOAS the need for the thermostat to be raised.  Only non-hooded sweaters and jackets may be worn ON CAMPUS.  Teachers - your assistance for enforcement is expected; call SSSO for assistance, if needed.  On rainy days, students are encouraged to use foldable umbrellas or clear ponchos.

·         JFKHS Spirit Fridays:  Students may wear a JFKHS Club/Organization/Interscholastic/Class Shirts such as Vivace, JROTC, Nursing, or other approved JFKHS shirts. Uniform bottom is required.  All shirts must promote JFKHS. JFKHS colors alone are UNACCEPTABLE.  Again- this is on Fridays! 

FROM THE COUNSELORS: 

·         Attention Seniors: Apply for financial aid now.  Applications for the FAFSA are online atwww.fafsa.gov. Counselors presented financial aid information regarding the FAFSA and financial aid.  Booklets and worksheets were given to all English 12 students.  If you were absent, you may pick up your handouts in the Counseling Office.  

·         Juniors and Seniors!  Hawaii Pacific University and Chamanade University will be back one last time to talk to you about attending their schools this year for the graduating seniors and next year for juniors.  Please, see Mr. Ballares in the counseling office for lunch-time passes.  The presentations will be in the Library Media Center.  February 24, 2016 will be HPU visit and March 10, 2016 will be Chamanade visit.  If you attend these meetings, you may receive an application fee waiver to their school."

·         Seniors!  University of Guam (UOG) placement test will be on April 18, 2016.  You must register by the April 15, 2016deadline to take the test.  Students will also have another opportunity to take the test on June 11, 2016 (Alpha Names: A-L) and June 12, 2016 (Alpha Name: M-Z).  You must register by the June 1, 2016 deadline to take the test.  Application fee for UOG is $49.00 USD.

·         CACGP provides tutoring every Monday during lunch in the library.  CACGP members, this will count as an event towards your grant-aid requirement.

·         It’s time to sign up if you are taking an AP exam this MAY. Please make a deposit payment in the business office of $15.00 for each AP exam you are going to take. This deposit is non-refundable. Provide the receipt to Mr. Pilarca in the counseling office. The deadline is February 17. If you have any question, please see your AP Teacher or Mr. Pilarca.

·         As per DOE SOP#200-006 – (1) attendance should be recorded daily per period in PowerTeacher; (2) PT grade books are to be updated weekly at minimum with grades for assignments, tests, quizzes and any other components to determine students’ grades; and (3) emails from parents/guardians should be responded to within forty-eight (48) hours. On Fridays during homeroom, please have your students remain standing during the Kennedy Alma Mater.                                                        

·         Campus Hours:  Office Hours: 5:50 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.(Includes Counseling and SSSO)

o   FOAS Office Hours: 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and closed during lunch. All business transactions will be conducted through the FOAS window except for NAF deposits.

ATTENTION STUDENTS

¥  Congratulations to the following students who competed in UOG's 8th Math Quiz Competition held on April 30 at the University of Guam: Sean Aguilar, David Gugin, Karl Adriano, Chino Cruz, Janice Lee, Elijah Reyes,Alyssa Cabatic, Aubrie Cabatic, JeongInn Park, Chadler Iriarte,Ezechiel Palacol, Ikea Natividad, Jun-Patrick Salalila, Jos Malig-on, Chelcy Gozum, Rino Lubang, Al Labang, and Michael Kasala. 4 JFK teams made it to the final round. It was a heart pumping event as students solve math problems and trivia questions in front of a live audience. The tie breaker was between two JFK teams. Overall, JFK placed 2nd and 3rd and took home 6 plaques. Also in attendance were other JFK students who came to support and cheer on our participants. Good job Islanders. And way to go Math Department!!! Thank you Mrs. San Pablo and Mr. Aguilar for coaching and inspiring our students to obtain these awards.

¥  Congratulations to the Class of 2015-2016 and their advisers, Mrs. Iriarte and Mr. Murphy for an awesome evening of Seniors’ get together for “One More Wish, One Last Night” last April 30 at the Sheraton Laguna Resort.

¥  Today, May 3rd is “National Teachers’ Day”.  This week is Teachers’ Appreciation Week.  Please, show your appreciation to your teachers through your kind words and gestures everyday but most especially this week.

ATTENTION STUDENTS

We are on our second full week of classes and you have been very compliant with the school rules!  Keep it up Islanders!  We are proud of you!

Attendance Procedure: Upon return after any absences, students must submit a letter of excuse or doctor's note to the Attendance Office. Fill out the request for Admit Slip and attach the note. Acceptance is before 1st block, during recess and lunch, and immediately after dismissal. For Absent Pre-arranged from an off-island trip, submit your boarding passes upon return. 

Freshmen, your English 9 teachers will distribute a booklet on Policies User Agreement for Educational Technology, Wireless Access, Cell Phone Use, and Media Release. The acknowledgment form has to be signed by both students and parents. Return it to the English 9 teachers as soon as possible.

JFKHS continues the implementation of the Positive Behavior Expectations (PBE).  All students are expected to comply with the expectations. 

Students are reminded of the following:  All bags must be mesh or see-thru; no exceptions, even for athletes.  Jackets and sweaters with hoodies or that do not open in front are not to be worn while on campus. If your classroom is too cold, report to FOAS the need for the thermostat to be raised. On rainy days, students are to use foldable umbrellas or clear ponchos. Students must be in full uniform at all times while on campus.  Use or possession of chewing gum, tobacco in any form, vaping paraphernalia, or pugua (betel nut) is prohibited while on campus. Teachers – your assistance for enforcement is expected; call SSSO for assistance if needed.  

Eligible students wishing to park on campus may apply for driver's decal until August 31.  Decals and parking spaces will be assigned on a first-time, first-served basis. Visit the SSSO and see Miss Judy for application requirements.   Students may not park on campus without a parking permit.

"Count Me In," be counted every school day!  Compulsory Age: Guam Code Annotated, 17GCA, requires all students from age 5 through 15 years of age to attend school. Tardiness: Passing time between classes is 5 minutes. Report to your designated classroom on time!  Late Absence: 15 minutes or longer will be considered an absent by tardy even though the student is present in class. Three unexcused tardies convert to 1 unexcused absence.

Please submit your completed Breakfast/Lunch Applications your complete to FOAS Office immediately.  If you received benefits last year, you will continue to do so up until September 29th.  If you DO NOT submit an application for the breakfast/lunch program by September 29th, you will have to pay full price of .50 for breakfast and $2.50 for lunch.

ATTENTION STUDENTS
Good morning Islanders! The 19th Annual ISLA Art-A-Thon has begun! Pledge Drive Begins: September 6-30. 40% of the proceeds will go back to the school. So help us raise funds to support our art programs! The Art-A-Thon will also hold an art competition for those participating in the pledge. Winners will be announced on opening exhibition day in March 2, 2017. If interested, see any of your art teachers for a packet.
Attention All JFK Students!  LIFE671 will be meeting every Thursday during lunch in D112.  Join us as we learn to honor God in dynamic ways as we seek Him through music and arts.  Make time for Jesus in your week and see how He can move in your life! ATTENTION STUDENTS

·         Annyeonghasseyo Islanders! Homecoming will be held next week Saturday. October 1st at the JFK football field from 4:00 – 9:00 pm. Have pride, show class, and support our awesome football players as they compete against the Southern High dolphins. See you there!

·         Students who have lunch dropped off for them must have the food delivered NO LATER THAN 10:45. The students must come to the office only during lunch period to pick up their lunch. Passes will not be issued to students telling them that lunch has been delivered for them. The office will no longer announce over the intercom for students to come get their lunches. Any unclaimed meals will be discarded at the end of the lunch period for food safety reasons. 

·         Attention, Islanders! Are you struggling with English, math, science, or social studies? Well, NHS is offering lunchtime tutoring on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting on September 13. Fliers will be posted in the classrooms for more information. Ask your teachers for a pass. We hope to see you there!

Students must be in full uniform at all times while on campus.  Use or possession of chewing gum, tobacco in any form, vaping paraphernalia, or pugua (betel nut) is prohibited while on campus. Teachers – your assistance for enforcement is expected; call SSSO for assistance if needed. 

·         "Count Me In," be counted every school day!  Compulsory Age: Guam Code Annotated, 17GCA, requires all students from age 5 through 15 years of age to attend school. Tardiness: Passing time between classes is 5 minutes. Report to your designated classroom on time!  Late Absence: 15 minutes or longer will be considered an absent by tardy even though the student is present in class. Three unexcused tardies convert to 1 unexcused absence.

·         Submit your completed Breakfast/Lunch Applications to FOAS Office immediately.  If you received benefits last year, you will continue to do so up until September 29th.  If you DO NOT submit an application for the breakfast/lunch program by September 29th, you will have to pay full price of .50 for breakfast and $2.50 for lunch.

·         Be vigilant of your surroundings always!  Report any suspicious activity to your teachers, staff and administrators or call the Crime Stoppers at 477-HELP.

·         JFKHS Spirit Fridays:  Students may wear a JFKHS Club/Organization/Interscholastic/Class Shirts such as

o   Vivace, JROTC, Nursing, or other approved JFKHS shirts. Uniform bottom is required.  All shirts must promote JFKHS. JFKHS colors alone are UNACCEPTABLE.  Again- this is on Fridays only!

  • Student portraits will be taken from Oct. 11-17 during your Language Arts classes.  Student ID is included with packet purchase.
  •   Oct. 13, Thursday will be JFKHS PTSA meeting at 6:30 at the Media Center.  Please, encourage your parents/guardians to attend.

  • Oct. 19 is the last day of first quarter, please check with your teachers if you need to make up for your grades.

ETS offers academic tutoring, College & Career exploration activities, assistance with College Applications, Financial Aid and scholarship applications, College Entrance (SAT/ACT) Fee waivers, financial literacy and more. All services are FREE! For more information see Mr. Lujan in the Counseling Office.
  • Students are you interested in attending Hawaii Pacific University-HPU? HPU College visit will be held on Wednesday, October 12, 2016 during lunch from 10:55pm-11:55pm at the Media Center. 
  • Attention 10th and 11th Graders, Interested in attending College after graduation?  The first step is to review your strengths and weaknesses in Mathematics and English is to take the PSAT this October 19. There are only 25 slots left to take the exam. If you are interested, please pay $15.00 at the business office and provide the receipt to Mrs. Gina Santos or Mr. Jonathan Pilarca in the counseling office to receive a Booklet. 
  • University of Guam's Upward Bound (UB) college prep program is now accepting applications from eligible high school students  (9th through 12th grade.) UB provides free tutoring, college prep activities, career exploration activities, assistance with financial aid/ scholarship applications, summer program at UOG, and more benefits!   • Attention seniors": If you received a graduation credit letter and diploma application from your counselor, please submit them with parent’s signatures to the counseling office as soon as possible.
  • Attention Seniors: Coca-Cola Scholarships awards $1,000 to finalists and $20,000 to recipients.  Apply online atwww.coca-colascholarsfoundation.org.  Deadline isOctober 31, 2016.

  • Congratulations to the JFKHS Athletes for winning the Championships: The Undefeated Junior Varsity in Volleyball; Cross Country boys for taking the first place and the girls for taking the third place.  You indeed make the Islander Family proud!
  • A great thanks to the Islanders and their families for making JFK win $1,000.00, the second place prize for the “Bag Promo” of Payless Markets! Let us aim for the first place that means a $2,000.00 prize.  By just bringing the bag when shopping and when asked what school, say “JFK”, the school wins the prize.
  • Attention Students, October is Guam Bullying Prevention Month! Accessorize your uniforms by wearing something orange such as ties, shoelaces or socks.  On October 19, Wednesday and let’s unite for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion!
