ATTENTION STUDENTS

  • Today, October 31, there will be a PEP Rally in the courtyard sponsored by the Class of 2019.  It will be a modified schedule, please check with your Homeroom teachers.  Lunch will be at 10:35 -11:35.
  • Nov. 2 is holiday in observance of “All Souls Day”.
  • Hey Islanders!!! Tonight is the last day to support the class of 2017 as they present the Revenge of Childhood Friends Haunted House.  Come by and watch your forgotten childhood characters come to life at Island Girl Power in Dededo.  The nightmares start at 6. Tickets are $5 in advance and $8 at the door.  You’ll wish you never forgot them…. and they’ll make sure you never will.  See any of your Senior Class Officers or purchase in Rm D115. 
  • Nov. 3 is Parent Teacher Conference (PTC).  Parents and students are encouraged to meet the teachers anytime from 7-12.
  • Last day to submit November activity proposal isNovember 7, 2016.  Any activity proposal received after the deadline will not be entertained as stated on the SOP three weeks prior to the activity to take place.  However, December activity proposal can be submitted after the deadline ofNovember 7, 2016.  Deadline to submit December activity proposal will beNovember 28, 2016.  Please plan accordingly to meet the deadline set on activity proposals.  Future activity proposal deadline for next year will be forthcoming and distributed during WAY meeting onNovember 7, 2016.
  • Hafa Adai Islanders, please support the AFJROTC by buying a "Halloween Mystery Goody!" It's $4.00 a gram and all the profit will be donated to Make-A-Wish Foundation. See any Cadet Officer for more details. Thank You!
  • Attention Islanders! Join the Junior Class on Friday, November 4, 2016, as they devote a whole night to gaming! Traditional board games & video games will be played from 4 to 8 PM in the Cafeteria. Tickets are $2 pre-bought & $3 at the door. Snacks & beverages will also be sold. Purchase tickets from any class officer or in room A208.
  • For SAFETY reasons, random searches and evacuation drills will be conducted on a monthly basis.
  • Students who have lunch dropped off for them must have the food delivered NO LATER THAN 10:45. The students must come to the office only during lunch period to pick up their lunch. The office will no longer announce over the intercom for students to come get their lunches. Any unclaimed meals will be discarded at the end of the lunch period for food safety reasons. 
  • Attention, Islanders! Are you struggling with English, math, science, or social studies? Well, NHS is offering lunchtime tutoring on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  Fliers are posted in the classrooms for more information. Ask your teachers for a pass. We hope to see you there!
  • Attention Students:  Are you still looking for a way to obtain Service learning hours? Go to the Guam Service Learning Website to register as a JFKHS student? Find an activity that interests you and it can be applied to your service learning hours.
  • Students are reminded of the following:  All bags must be mesh or see-thru; no exceptions, even for athletes.  Jackets and sweaters with hoodies or that do not open in front are not to be worn while on campus. If your classroom is too cold, report to FOAS the need for the thermostat to be raised. On rainy days, students are to use foldable umbrellas or clear ponchos. Students must be in full uniform at all times while on campus.  Use or possession of chewing gum, tobacco in any form, vaping paraphernalia, or pugua (betel nut) is prohibited while on campus. Teachers – your assistance for enforcement is expected; call SSSO for assistance if needed. 
  • "Count Me In," be counted every school day!  Compulsory Age: Guam Code Annotated, 17GCA, requires all students from age 5 through 15 years of age to attend school. Tardiness: Passing time between classes is 5 minutes. Report to your designated classroom on time!  Late Absence: 15 minutes or longer will be considered an absent by tardy even though the student is present in class. Three unexcused tardies convert to 1 unexcused absence.
  • Be vigilant of your surroundings always!  Report any suspicious activity to your teachers, staff and administrators or call the Crime Stoppers at 477-HELP.
  • JFKHS Spirit Fridays:  Students may wear a JFKHS Club/Organization/Interscholastic/Class Shirts such as Vivace, JROTC, Nursing, or other approved JFKHS shirts. Uniform bottom is required.  All shirts must promote JFKHS. JFKHS colors alone are UNACCEPTABLE.  Again- this is on Fridays only! 

FROM THE COUNSELORS:

  • Students are you thinking about going to college? Chaminade of Honolulu college visit will be held on Tuesday, November 15, 2016 during lunch from 10:55am-11:55am at the Media Center.
  • Attention all men, 18 years or older:  By law, you must register with Selective Service, even if you are from another country and not a U.S. citizen. Failure to register will disqualify you from federal student financial aid, job training benefits, and federal employment.  Register online at www.sss.gov or at your local post office.  You may also see Gina Santos in the Counseling Office.

  • University of Guam's Educational Talent Search (ETS) college prep program is now accepting applications from eligible high school students from 9th to 12th grade. ETS offers academic tutoring, College & Career exploration activities, assistance with College Applications, Financial Aid and scholarship applications, College Entrance (SAT/ACT) Fee waivers, financial literacy and more. All services are FREE! For more information see Mr. Lujan in the counselling office.
  • Attention Seniors: Coca-Cola Scholarships awards $1,000 to finalists and $20,000 to recipients.  Apply online atwww.coca-colascholarsfoundation.org.  Deadline is Today, October 31, 2016.
  • Attention Seniors:  Check out the bulletin board outside of the Counseling Office for information on scholarships, colleges and universities, and career resources. 
  • Attention Seniors:  APIASF Scholarships are available for $2,500 and more.  Pick up a brochure from your counselor or apply online atwww.apiasf.org.  Application opens in September and closes in January.

ATTENTION STUDENTS

  • Nov. 8 is Election Day.  No classes on this day.  Please, vote if you are registered voter and exercise your right to choose your civil leaders!
  • Congratulations to the newly selected National Honor Society (NHS) JFK Chapter members!  
  • Last day to submit November activity proposal is today, November 7, 2016.  Any activity proposal received after the deadline will not be entertained as stated on the SOP three weeks prior to the activity to take place.  However, December activity proposal can be submitted after the deadline of November 7, 2016.  Deadline to submit December activity proposal will be November 28, 2016.  Please plan accordingly to meet the deadline set on activity proposals.  Future activity proposal deadline for next year will be forthcoming and distributed during WAY meeting on November 7, 2016.

ATTENTION STUDENTS

  • ATTENTION SENIORS! Pre-order yearbooks now, during lunch in room B206. Yearbooks start at $50, and the price will increase after Christmas Break.Full payments only.
  • Hafa Adai Islanders, WAY will be hosting our very first November Fest on November 23, 2016, during activity time. We will be having entertainment and games. Intramural Games with the fee of $2-5. Movies for $1, food and drink sales that cost from $1-3, so we highly encourage you to bring extra monies on this day.  Locations of varies events are posted around the campus.  Also, wristband for $1 to dress down on this day. Sales are taking place in front of the main office during break and lunch time until November 22, 2016.
  • Nov. 24 is Thanksgiving Holiday and Nov. 25 is a flexible make-up day.  No classes on these days.    Please, ensure that you extend your thanks to the people that have shown you love, care and help in any manner. HAPPY THANKSGIVING ISLANDERS! 
  • ATTENTION: Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors, the JKFHS Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) is conducting a school uniform survey this week via the Language Arts classes.  Make sure you exercise your right to vote on the colors and styles of the uniforms.
  • Students on Free/Reduced Meal Program status may not transfer, by selling or giving, breakfast or lunch tickets to other students.  Students not eligible for Free/Reduced Meal Program cannot use Free/Reduced tickets.  Offenders are subject to disciplinary action, including removal from the Free/Reduced Meal Program.
  • Students with Student Parking Permits for this semester must reapply for permits for next semester.  Parking permits are limited and given on a "first come, first served" basis.  Other students are already applying.  Please go to the SSSO ASAP to fill out an application for a parking permit.

  • Please, take note that Second Quarter ends on Jan. 12.  Meet with your Guidance Counselors for your questions on your schedule for the upcoming second semester.
  • Attention Islanders! There are NO yearbook preorder sales for the month of January. Yearbook preorder sales will resume on February 1, 2017. Yearbooks will be $75 and can be purchased at B206." 
  • Congratulations to the Soccer Team for winning the Championship and to the Boys’ and Girls’ Wrestling for winning the 3rd place in the recently concluded Playoff Seasons.

Students can set up a free College Board account at any time. If you don't see your scores when you log in, you may need to enter an access code. You can find your access codes from your counselor. Please see your counselor to pick up test booklet that you used in October Testing. Thank you for participating this year PSAT Testing.
  • The National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK0, is offering a Short-Term Research Experience for Underrepresented Persons (STEP-UP) program. This opportunity provides hands-
  • on summer research experience for juniors and seniors interested in exploring research careers. Ten selected students will spend two summer months at Hawaii's medical school conducting research and being mentored by university scientists. Expenses are paid, including a trip to Washington, D.C. at the end of the summer to present research findings. Application Deadline:  February 15, 2017.
  • Charlie Corn Scholarship  - Awards up to $3,500 for engineering and architecture studies.  Deadline: January 27, 2017.  Applications are available in the Counseling Office.

  • Today, Jan. 18 will be an early release for the students.
  • Tomorrow, Jan. 19 will be the PTSA meeting at 6:30 in the Media Center, please attend or encourage your parents to attend because the issue on uniform change will be discussed.
  • Jan. 20 is Single Activity Day.
  • Jan 20 at 6:00 P.M. the Seniors and Parents’ Information Meeting (SPIM) will be held at the Cafeteria.

  • For SAFETY reasons, random searches and evacuation drills will be conducted on a monthly basis.

  • Attention Freshmen: Hafa Adai. If you indicated your interest in enrolling in either the Lodging Management Program OR ProStart, the Tourism Academy program would like to meet you.   • It’s that time of year again, Islanders! Read-A-Thon 2017 “Read to the Beat!” will take place from February 6-24. If you are interested in joining, please see your English teacher for more details. In spirit of this year's musical theme, from February 6-9 a list of songs with literary allusions (references) will be given to all teachers to read and post in their classrooms. For each day, specific lines from a song, the artist, and the song title will be given. Your job is to figure out the book title AND author that is being referenced. If you think you’ve got the answer for the day, come to room B206 DURING LUNCH ONLY to claim a prize! It's only one winner per day and it’s first-come, first serve! On February 10, however, we are asking any of you to create an ORIGINAL poem or song that promotes literacy and the importance of reading. The poem/song must be a minimum of eight (8) lines and recited/performed in front of teacher judges in room B206 DURING LUNCH ONLY. The student with the most creative poem/song will not only win the grand prize, but your work will be published on the school’s bulletin, posted throughout the campus, and given to all teachers.   • Junior State of America (JSA) Summer Program at Princeton, Stanford, and Georgetown is looking for 9th - 11th grade students with civic and leadership potential.  Four scholarships are available. Deadline is February 26.  Pick up a brochure in the Counseling Office.
  • The National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK0, is offering a Short-Term Research Experience for Underrepresented Persons (STEP-UP) program. This opportunity provides hands-on summer research experience for juniors and seniors interested in exploring research careers. Ten selected students will spend two summer months at Hawaii's medical school conducting research and being mentored by university scientists. Expenses are paid, including a trip to Washington, D.C. at the end of the summer to present research findings. • Attention Students: Wristband for Dress Up on February 17, 2017, begins sales, today Monday, Feb-ruary 13 - 16, 2017 at the Concession booth located at the gym during lunch time. The wristband is for $1. Also, February Spirit Week begins on February 13-17, 2017. Show your islander spirit by acces-sorizing your uniform with the following: Monday, February 13, 2017 - "Wear your Heart on Your Sleeve" - Accessorize with hearts such as cut outs, headbands, socks, etc. Tuesday, February 14, 2017 - "Teddy Bear Tuesday" - Bring a teddy bear to school or cut out. Wednesday, February 15, 2017 - "Cupid Wednesday" - Accessorize as Cupid such as headbands, socks etc. NO bows/arrows permitted. • It’s that time of year again, Islanders! Read-A-Thon 2017 “Read to the Beat!” will take place from February 6-24. If you are interested in joining, please see your English teacher for more details. In spirit of this year's musical theme, from February 6-9 a list of songs with literary allusions (references) will be given to all teachers to read and post in their classrooms. For each day, specific lines from a song, the artist, and the song title will be given. Your job is to figure out the book title AND author that is being ref-erenced. If you think you’ve got the answer for the day, come to room B206 DURING LUNCH ONLY to claim a prize! It's only one winner per day and it’s first-come, first serve! On February 10, however, we are asking any of you to create an ORIGINAL poem or song that promotes literacy and the importance of read-ing. The poem/song must be a minimum of eight (8) lines and recited/performed in front of teacher judges in room B206 DURING LUNCH ONLY. The student with the most creative poem/song will not only win the grand prize, but your work will be published on the school’s bulletin, posted throughout the campus, and given to all teachers. • Students on Free/Reduced Meal Program status may not transfer, by selling or giving, breakfast or lunch tickets to other students. • For SAFETY reasons, random searches and evacuation drills will be conducted on a monthly basis.
• As a reminder, the first bell is at 6:45 A.M. and tardy bell is at 6:55a.m. Attendance will be considered late-absence after 7:10a.m. Be responsible! Car riders are advised to plan ahead of time and be prepared to be on campus no later than 6:45a.m. Students who are tardy will receive referrals/ODRs for parents to sign and return to SSSO. Your absences will remain unexcused (Absent/A in PowerSchool) for any of the fol-lowing reasons:

  • Congratulations and KUDOS to the Sophomore Council officers, advisers (Mrs. Hecita, Mrs. Moore, Mr. Manansala) and students for a job well done on the Sweethearts’ Ball last Saturday at Holiday Resort!  A huge thank you also to the teachers that attended and supported the event (Mrs. Orot, Miss Olaguera, Mrs. Kido, Mrs. Torres and Mr. Andres).
  • A great “Thanks” to all the teachers and presenters who volunteered their time, and talent to the accomplishment of the first Parent Workshop that happened last Saturday, Feb. 25.  To the students whose parents attended, “Thank you” as well for without them the Workshop will not materialize.

"March Media Madness."  On Friday, March 17, 2017 is dress down and student can purchase wristbands starting on Monday, March 13 -16, 2017 during lunch time at the concession stand located @ Gym.  Students can accessorize their uniform for the following days:  However, students must be in FULL Uniform on Monday-Thursday.  "Musical Monday" 03/13: Students may accessorize as their favorite musical artist. Examples:  wear a jacket with no hood, headbands, tutus, etc.” "Take a Side Tuesday" - 3/14: Student may accessorize to resemble their favorite heroes and/or villains.  Examples:  wear lightning bolts to resemble DC's the Flash.” "Color War Wednesday" - 3/15: Students may accessorize in their respective class color.  Freshman:  Yellow; Sophomores:  Green; Juniors:  Black; Seniors: White.  Examples:  face paint or accessories with items such as headbands, socks, etc.

  • Attention seniors - UOG Army ROTC scholarships for 2 - 4 years are available. Applications are now being accepted however, funding is limited.  Board meets in August 2017 to select candidates. Must have College Board SAT scores.  Register to take the SAT this May.  Applications are available in the Counseling Office.
  • Attention Seniors:  The Moda Gino’s Scholarship awards $500 per semester, for one year, for books and supplies. Eligibility: minimum GPA of 90%, resident of Guam and has been on island for the past 2 consecutive years, and full time enrollment at the UOG or GCC. Applications are in the Counseling Office.  Deadline:  May 1, 2017.
  • Health Opportunities and Medical Exposure Summer Program (H.O.M.E.) is accepting applications for its shadowing and mentoring program.  Spend part of your summer learning more about what medical professionals do and what their jobs entail.  Must have a minimum 3.5 GPA and a strong interest in the medical or related health fields.  Application is available online www.homeguam.org. Deadline is April 1, 2017.
  • Registration for the 2017 Youth for Youth Conference is now open. The conference is scheduled for Friday, March 31 to Sunday, April 2, 2017 at the Hyatt Regency Guam. See Mr. Lujan in the Counseling Office for more info.

  • Congratulations to JFKHS Health Careers and Science Program for winning first place in 2017 Health Careers and Science Academic Challenge Bowl held on March 30th at GCC campus. The team consists of Cyrene Bansil (Captain), Joshua Reyes (Co-captain), and members Albrite Cruz, Ezechiel Palacol, Breanna Castro, Calvin Truong, Marlit Gonzalvo, and Ernisha Dela Cruz.  The team got a trophy, medals, stethoscopes, first aid kits, and school supplies!  Congratulations to the Adviser as well!

  • Buenas and Hafa Adai! This week is the Gupot Chamorro Spirit Week. Show your spirit by following the theme of each day.  On Monday, Lunes etmundo, students are able to accessorize with blue and green. Must be in full uniform.  On Tuesday, Mattes mar mar, students are able to accessorize in flower headbands or mar mars. Must be in full uniform.  On Wednesday, Metkoles tinifok, students are able to accessorize with woven leave items. Must be in full uniform.  On Thursday, Huebes lancheru, students are able to accessorize in a flannel shirt over their uniform shirt and bottoms. On Friday, Fiestan Betnes, students are able to dress down and must follow dress code policy stated in the waiver forms. Wristbands will be sold at the concession stand during lunch for $1 starting April 3rd through 6th only.
  • SPED INTO SPRING! The University of Guam students of 2018 invite all interested students and parents to attend this workshop at Ordot Chalan Pago Elementary School from 8:30 -1:00 P.M. on April 8, 2017.  Registration is free.
  • Join the Class of 2018 in a movie night this Friday, April 7, 2017 at 5:00pm.  Showtime at 5:30.  We will be showing, "10 Things I hate about you" and "Poltergeist". FREE ENTRANCE! Snacks and food will be sold inside. No outside food/drinks allowed!

  • Attention Seniors, Core Tech Foundation awards up to 12 scholarships of $2500 to attend a U.S. accredited four-year college or university. Applicants should have strong records of achievement as shown by their grades, leadership skills, awards, extraordinary service to others, perseverance in the face of adversity and great potential to help shape the future of our island. Applications are in the counseling office if interested or download the application online at www.coretechintl.com 
  • The District Wide Assessments continue this week, the students are advised to bring Two No.2 Pencils and Erasers. April 24 - 28 - SBA Test Administration and Make-up.  Please, see your counselors for any question.
  • Attention Seniors:  Keep your options open and file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to secure funding for college.  See your counselor or go online at fafsa.ed.gov.   Eighty-eight (88) JFK seniors have already submitted theirs.
  • Attention seniors - UOG Army ROTC scholarships for 2 - 4 years are available. Applications are now being accepted however, funding is limited.  Board meets in August 2017 to select candidates. Must have College Board SAT scores.  Register to take the SAT this May.  Applications are available in the Counseling Office.  
  • Attention Seniors:  The Moda Gino’s Scholarship awards $500 per semester, for one year, for books and supplies. Eligibility: minimum GPA of 90%, resident of Guam and has been on island for the past 2 consecutive years, and full time enrollment at the UOG or GCC. ATTENTION STUDENTS:

  • VIVACE CONCERT will be on May 5th and 6th, please support our choir.
  • Congratulations to the 2017-2018 National Honor Society Officers who were inaugurated on April 28, 2017! KUDOS to the advisers, Ms. April Cordova and Mr. Dylan Orot. Your fellow Islanders surely are confident that you will uphold the four Pillars of this prestigious organization through your leadership.
  • KUDOS to the Advisers: Dr. Balmeo, Mrs. D. Quinata, Ms. Haruo, Mr. Lujan and Mrs. Wooley and the Class Council Officers of Class of 2018 for keeping the Junior Prom tradition at JFKHS vibrant and exciting!
  • Congratulations to the JROTC who again made the ISLANDERS true to JFKHS school mission of becoming globally primed high achievers when they competed in the Golden Bear Competition held in Long Beach CA!       They will bring trophies on Wednesday when they come back one is for winning First Place in the “Unarmed Novice Commander” category. More are to be announced.
  • May 19 will be Islanders’ Day. It will be a fun-filled day for the Islanders. Please, do not get in trouble in order to be able to participate and enjoy this day.
  • Graduating Seniors: 2017 Core Tech Foundation Scholarship: Interested in receiving financial support for college! Application forms for the Core Tech Foundation Scholarship are available starting Monday, May 1, 2017 in the main office.  Eligibility requirements are 1) Guam Resident; 2) Graduate from a Guam Public/Private School, Class of 2017; 3) Carry a minimum of 3.0 GPA at time of application, furnish high school transcript and SAT and/of ACT scores;
  • 4) Submit application by May 8, 2017 to Core Tech Foundation, ATTN: Marketing and Communications Department. 5) Submit 3 letters of recommendation:  2 from a teacher or administrator from the school and one from a personal contact; 6) Provide evidence of enrolling full-time in an accredited U.S. undergraduate program in the Fall 2017(at the time of receiving the scholarship). Scholarship recipients will be announced June 10, 2017.  Good Luck!
  • Islanders, Summer School is getting closer, please see your counselors if you need to take summer class/es. Bussing and breakfast will be free.
  • Hafa Adai Islanders! This year's JFK Islander Pride Day will be held at the Guam Premiere Outlet (GPO) on May 6, 2017 from 10:00am to 2:00pm. Please, come and be part of this showcase of JFKHS students’ abilities and talents.
  • ALL SENIORS, ensure that you're working in your KeyTrain account and registered for the WorkKeys Assessment. If you miss the week of April 4 – 6 testing, plan on testing between May 1-May 8 in the Business Department.  If you've any other questions or concerns, please see any Business Teacher in the A Wing for further details.
  • Do you have creative ideas to contribute for the improvement of our school activities? Do you have what it takes to lead the student body? If yes, consider candidacy for your class councils next school year.
  • Students on Free/Reduced Meal Program status may not transfer, by selling or giving, breakfast or lunch tickets to other students.  Students not eligible for Free/Reduced Meal Program cannot use Free/Reduced tickets.  Offenders are subject to disciplinary action, including removal from the Free/Reduced Meal Program.
  • For SAFETY reasons, random searches and evacuation drills will be conducted on a monthly basis.
  • As a reminder, the first bell is at 6:45 A.M. and tardy bell is at 6:55a.m. Attendance will be considered late-absence after 7:10a.m. Be responsible! Car riders are advised to plan ahead of time and be prepared to be on campus no later than 6:45a.m. Students who are tardy will receive referrals/ODRs for parents to sign and return to SSSO.
  • Main Office and Counseling Office hours: 5:45 A. M. until 2:15 P.M.
  • FOAS Office Hours (payments for verification of enrollment, transcript, etc.): 7:00 A.M. until 2:00 P.M.
  • Cafeteria: Breakfast time: 6:00 A.M. – 6:40 A.M. Lunch time: 10:55 A.M. – 11:40 A.M. Students are reminded of the following: All bags must be mesh or see-thru; no exceptions, even for athletes. Jackets and sweaters with hoodies or that do not open in front are not to be worn while on campus.
  • If your classroom is too cold, report to FOAS the need for the thermostat to be raised. On rainy days, students are to use foldable umbrellas or clear ponchos. Students must be in full uniform at all times while on campus. Use or possession of chewing gum, tobacco in any form, vaping paraphernalia, or pugua (betel nut) is prohibited while on campus.

  • Students are you thinking about going to college on Guam? University of Guam will be visiting JFK to talk to you about their college and answer any questions you may have about attending UOG. So, MARK YOUR CALENDAR!!!  Tuesday, May 16, 2017 from 11:00-11:30am at the JFK Library Media Center. Sign up sheet in front desk at counseling office.
